Blues Jam at the Ain’t Nothin But… Blues bar

I’ve been meaning to visit this venue for months. It’s a blues bar, a stone’s throw away from Regent Street and Carnaby Street and on Sunday afternoons it has a free ‘Blues Jam’.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of everyone involved. Basically there’s a ‘house band’ for each session run by a guy called Barry and (I think) pulled together from a group of regulars. They play a short three or four song set.

Barry then organise ‘jams’. Anyone’s free to take part in the jam. They just have to put their name on the list saying what their expertise is. The new bands usually consist of a mix of the house band and the jammers. I guess many of the jammers are regulars. So Barry has a good idea of who plays well together.

The session lasts from 4pm until 8pm and to be honest, the time flew by. I was only going to stay for an hour or so, but ended up staying until the end. The clear highlight was a girl with a stunning blues / soul voice. I think she was called Ashley Brown. But she had a really soulful voice.

A word of warning. The place gets busy.
