The New Eves
It has been an important year for the New Eves. With the release of their highly praised debut album ‘The New Eve is Rising’, they appear to have gathered some well deserved momentum, leading to two nights at Hoxton Hall. Their shamanic, alt-folk, Velvet Underground mashup, featuring classical instruments and at times sharp chilling harmonies, sounds like it has come from Mother Earth herself.
As somebody who loves the Velvet Underground when they head off into controlled chaos, along with discordant classical music, the New Eves sound is heaven, as they mix these genres to create their own unique sound. Most songs descend into a frenzy of cellos, violins, guitars and voices, with ritualistic bass and drums underpinning the music. It’s a heady concoction. Their music always takes me out of my body. Often their songs seem to take me on a journey to a different plane of existence. It’s like another reality is forcing its way through the band, into our reality.
They closed the show by inviting their support band, Radio Anorak, back on stage to play the Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light’. It was all a bit shambolic, but glorious fun for both them and us.
