Fantastic evening with a Bo Ningen and support from the Wytches. Two of my favourite noise merchants on the same evening. It was always going to be good.

Great Escape 2014 – Day 2

First full day at the Great Escape and a big improvement in the weather. It’s amazing the difference a bit of sun makes. Instead of ‘trudging’ between venues the short walks were actually pleasant. I’d still prefer a bigger concentration of venues as there were several times when I headed to a venue that was at capacity with no nearby venue. Also the timings could do with tweaking. Venues that were near to each other often had similar stage times.

So who did I manage to see?

Ella vs Mountain – sounded nice. But hard to tell as she was playing the tent in the hub and there was a lot of noise

Black City Lights – DJ and singer. Not my cup of tea

The Darlingtons – energetic midday set from these guys

French for Rabbits – nice kick-back with a beer on a sunny day type music

John J Presley – excellent set from one of my current favourites

September Girls – only caught the last two songs. But sounded excellent

Baby Strange – didn’t work for me.

Telegram – seen these guys before and again I was impressed by them

Esben and the Witch – listened to most their set from the street but managed to catch two songs. Sounded really good. Have to catch them again

Wytches – despite sound issues, another great set

Deathcrush – didn’t ‘get’ these girls. Lots of noise and shouting but nothing that grabbed me

Theo Verney – enjoyable set

Scott and Charlene’s wedding – don’t take themselves too seriously and seemed to be having a good time, as were the crowd

Barbarossa – not my cup of tea

Gavin James – hard to judge. Quiet music, but people were talking near me so I left

Femme – Seemed to be three girls dancing to a backing tape. I quickly moved on to the next venue

Serfina Steer – multi instruments uncluding a harp. Quiet nice laid back music

Syd Arthur – was looking forward to seeing these guys as I’d heard they were good. Just didn’t grab me at all

Public Acess TV – enjoyable set

Brawlers – energetic set that seemed to go down well.

Gnarlwolves – punk sound but nothing particularly interesting

Another great evening provided by the Wytches. Although they were support to Drenge, who are their themselves a great band. Wytches yet again proved to be the highlight of the evening. These guys are on fire.

I head into London for most my gigs. There’s so many venues, so there’s usually something on. That doesn’t mean that there’s no venues nearby, it’s just that many Hertfordshire venues don’t attract touring bands, instead there’s a heavy emphasis on local bands. So it was a bit of a surprise to see that one of my favourite new bands, The Wytches, were playing at Club 85. So a long overdue visit was required.

The evening started with Tilt Shift, a local Hertfordshire band. Their Facebook site says they’re a ‘indie/emo/math/something’ band. In other words, they try to play some quiet intricate music. Some interesting ideas in there. But the execution wasn’t the strongest. Often their ideas overtook the music. But they looked young. So I’m sure their music will mature with time. They clearly had the talent.

The next band, Sons of Gun (I think) organised the evening. They were a three piece but their drum mix was way too high to hear any vocals, and what I did hear was not particularly enjoyable. But I’ll put these vocal tuning issues down to the problems with sound.

After the support bands, it was time for the Wytches. As usual, they put in a great show. Full of energy but although good, it was the worst performance I’ve seen from them. The sound wasn’t brilliant with some issues with the vocals being low in the mix. They also kicked out their trailing wires a few times. I think somebody needs to buy them some tape. But I think the main reason for the lack of energy was the wide stage which meant the band were quiet spread out. But overall, a slightly off performance from the Wytches is better than a good performance from most bands. So a good evening overall.

Love the sound of this band and they’re great live. The longest performance of theirs I’ve seen and the best. They really benefited from the longer set.

Japandroids and the Wytches on the same bill was always going to be a good night and it was and it made up for the poor experience watching Japandroids at SXSW, where I queued for about an hour to get into a venue and only managed to catch two or three songs.
