I’ve seen Sunflower Bean a few times this year. They’ve basically toured continuously for most of the year but despite this. I thought the touring might have started to take it’s toll. But they didn’t look jaded tonight and this was the strongest performance I’ve seen from them.

Tonight was one of their biggest headline gigs of the year. But to be perfectly, honest, if the reaction of the crowd is anything to go by, they’re going to play bigger places than Scala next time they tour the UK.

Sunflower Bean are a psych band out of New York. Today’s Rough Trade gig marked the release of their first album ‘Human Ceremony’. Playing for about 40 minutes, they showed everyone what a good band they are. The lead singer Julia Cumming has a lovely melodic voice and Nick Killeen’s excellent guitar work driving each song forward. Although their songs are pretty short for a psych band, they have a few songs that appear to be ready to stretch themselves given the opportunity. Sadly they were due to play later in the evening, so any temptation to extend the songs into a psych fest had to be resisted and just left all of us wanting more.

Just two bands tonight, Morning Smoke and a band I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a few months, Sunflower Bean. Morning Smoke were okay but Sunflower Bean were everything I’d hope they would be. Playing a 60s style heavy psychedelic type of music. Each song was driven forward by some great guitar playing and a solid rhythm section. The set finished leaving us all wanting more.
