Best Gig

January was a really strong month. But the highlight was Black Honey, Cabbage and Freak. Although my view of Cabbage has since changed, at the time, I thought they were the real deal. Black Honey, were excellent as always.

Best new band

At the time, it was Cabbage. But due to the issues later in the year, I’ve no plans to see them again.

A New Year and a new season of Daylight Music and another day covering the photography duties. The lineup didn’t offer much potential for photgraphy. The Duke Stret Workshop were going to play from the HP Lovecraft inspired album, basically an actor speaking with them playing music at keyboards, a jazz quartet and a vocalist. But what the afternoon lacked in visual potential, it offered much in terms of eclectic programming and this turned out to be the case.

First up, the Duke Street Collective with a ‘War of the Worlds’ type album. The actor performed passages from HP Lovercraft books while they played errie music to heighten the tension. Sadly the performance was during daylight hours so it lacked the extra dramatic effect a dark stage could have offered. But I have to admit, I did enjoy it.

Next up, Partikle. Jazz is genre that’s passed me by. It’s not that I don’t like jazz when I hear it. I just don’t know where to start. So I’m not in a position to say if this was good jazz or not. But I know I enjoyed it and I guess that’s all that matters.

Closing the afternoon, was Strange Boy. He was for me the weakest of the bunch. Playing that kind of whipsy electronica-type music, nice but i felt like I’d heard the sound dozens of times before.
