Girl Band are just getting better and better. Tonight at a sold out 100 Club, they put in another impressive performance, and this was despite Dara arriving to the stage limping with a walking stick. Although I could see it was causing him some distress, he didn’t allow it to effect their show. The wall of oppressive, unhinged noise is an acquired taste. But one I love. On leaving the gig, you do feel like you’ve left the asylum.

Support was from Prom. Sadly, the vocals were a bit too low for my taste which undermined their performance on night when they couldn’t afford not to be at 100%.

A few weeks ago I caught Prom supporting Mourn. It was about a year since I’d last seen them and felt they’d grown massively as a band, definitely a band to watch so I thought I’d catch another support slot.

The headline act were Meat Wave. They sounded decent. But I wasn’t completely sold.

The first support act Service Bells were also okay.

But I was here to see Prom. It was a less intense set than the last few. I suspect the bigger stage and smaller crowd were partly to blame. But even being a slight notch down. They still sounded fantastic. I really like this band

My second day at the Lock Tavern Easter Festival and what looks on paper to be a very strong lineup.

The evening started with Lupo. Playing psychedelic inspired music. They were pretty tight and proficient with a sound I liked. A nice way to start the evening.

Next up were Francobollo who put in a great performance. But for some reason I just didn’t connect with them. I think if it had been a different venue and the crowd more rowdy, I suspect I might have come away raving about them.

I was really here for The Drink. I bought their album after hearing their single on Radio 6 and really liked it. The singer has a distinctive voice and an interesting guitar playing style. But I was left slightly disappointed. Not because they were bad put in a bad performance. It’s just that the vocals were at times lost through a combination of heavy bass sound and crowd noise. Which is a pity. When the vocals were heard, they were really good. I’ll have to catch these guys at another venue.

I’ve seen Skinny Girl Diet a few times. They’re a bit like marmite. Sometimes I enjoy them, other times I wonder what I see in them. They some times come across as ‘moody cows’ which shouldn’t be a problem as they’ve got an angsty sound. But it always seems that if they look surly when setting up, their performance suffer. But the last few times I’ve seen them they haven’t seemed as surly. Tonight was one of their less surly nights and therefore at the enjoyable end of their performance spectrum.

The last band for me tonight was PROM. God these guys are getting damn good. Noisy, shouty and pissed off. Mix these ingredients with some good thumping tunes and you’ve got a band who have a lot of potential. Definitely one of the better bands floating around the London scene at the moment and one I think I need to keep much closer tabs on.

After spending most of the week at the Shacklewell, I’d been persuaded to head to Birthdays to check out a Spanish band, Mourn and it turned out to be a good call and a welcome break from the Shack.

First up were Prom. I liked them the last time I saw them. But felt the lead singer’s other band Parlour, were a better band. But it’s been several months since I’d seen them and have to say I was really impressed. In fact, based on tonight. I think I prefer them to Parlour. (Happily watch either band, both are good). But there was an intensity to the sound, maybe helped by the stark red backlighting, that I think works better.

Mourn were up next. The first thing that strikes you is how young they are and I mean young. I think three of them are 18, but the bassist is 16 (I think). Surely a ‘school’ band aren’t ready for the international circuit?

Well it turns out I was emphatically wrong. This band are already good, and surely are destined to only get better.

Playing 2 minute power punk songs. There is absolutely nothing new or complicated about what they do. They appear to be a group who’s grown up on a diet of likes of PJ Harvey and Ramones who’ve picked up guitars and expressed their adolescent angst through music. In an odd way, it all seems innocent, but in another, that’s what punk surely is. They’re not trying anything other than it they are, four teenagers shouting about the things that piss them off (mostly boys). But it’s done well. Even though they started with three false starts due to technical problems. It didn’t phase them. They just got on with it. In fact, the biggest compliment I can give them, is that I thought a curtain was going to fall and we’d see another much older band were really playing. This is a band, I will definitely watch.
