Some friends at Bandstand Busking mentioned that Kitty, Daisy and Lewis were playing just down the road. I’ve seen them a few times and they’re a good live band. So off I trotted with them for a lovely afternoon of music at the Apple Tree pub for ‘Meet the Folks’ 20th birthday party. In all honesty, I felt like a bit of an interloper, having never been to any previous ‘Meet the Folks’ events. But I was really pleased I decided to go along. It was a great few hours of music, featuring a range of different music styles. From the R&B sound of Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, indie from Steve James Adams, the rocky Danny and the Champions of the World, and the country sounds of Applewood Road. Each band had their own charms, greatly helped by a lovely atmosphere in what was quiet a tiny venue.

My second Hyde Park gig. Today, Blur. But unlike Thursday that had a reasonably cohesive bill, the rest of today’s

My second Hyde Park gig. Today, Blur. But unlike Thursday that had a reasonably cohesive bill, the rest of today’s line-up was really weak (and odd). Rather than being a list of up-and-coming indie bands, it was a weird mixture. From festival World music, indie, and pop hip hop. Why? Would it have been so difficult to find appropriate bands to support Blur?

Although the line-up was weak. In some ways I can understand why they make so little effort. By the time Blur came on, the park was full of people who really don’t care about music. I’m not sure why you spend £70 to meet friends at a music festival and then have to buy expensive food and drink, when you could have met in pub elsewhere in London. But some of the crowd was really distracting.

I made a decision to try and see the other bands. (Even if they were all rubbish) So when Blur were playing, I didn’t want to spend 20 minutes pushing towards the front. So I found a place with sight of screens and stage and settled in to watch. But the first 10 minutes of the Blur gig was spoilt by everyone, and I mean everyone, talking. Not the quiet talking. No, the ‘we don’t care what’s going on around us, we’ll make as much noise as necessary to be heard over the music’, talking. Why, do you go an expensive gig, to then talk over headline act? I know it’s their money, but it’s also my money they’re wasting, by und. In the end. I kept moving further and further back until the crowd thinned out and it returned to a crowd who were watching the performance. I guess it was my fault, for not pushing down to the front.

Once I’d found a decent position. I thought Blur were brilliant. Unlike the Strokes. They knew their audience. Damon talked to the crowd rather than at the crowd. The band seemed to be enjoying playing and there was a lovely happy vibe coming from the stage. The new material, especially ‘Thought I was a Spaceman’, worked really well. The obvious crowd pleasers, pleased. I was a great set. I’m really glad I’ve managed to finally catch them. But I think it’s the last time I go to a Hyde Park gig. I’ll stick to small venues.

I Like Trains

and of course British Sea Power headlining the Friday and Sunday nights.

The whole weekend was fantastic, if a little cold. With Tan Hill’s staff doing an fantastic job of keeping the food and drink flowing. BSP’s choice of bands (ably helped by Mark Riley) was absolutely spot on. Although some of the music wasn’t to my taste, none of it was bad. Some, such as Rose Dougall had previously failed to impress me, yet here with a full band, worked. Matt Eaton without his band, preformed a random set in the bar accompanied by Noble that could have been a disaster, but turned out to be a refreshing ‘down to earth’ set. Everything just seem to work.

The standout performances for me was ‘Race Horses’ with their energetic indie pop sound. Tom White’s amazing performance where the stage wasn’t big enough for him, was a performance where even if you didn’t like his music, you couldn’t help but enjoy. Basia Bulat’s amazing voice helped the Americana inspired indie sound lift the audience (she’s Canadian). Probably the biggest surprise was the amazingly talented Kitty, Daisy & Lewis who brought us a big enjoyable slice of rockabilly. All the members of the band are from the same family, including Mam on double bass and Dad on Guitar. With the kids able to move between all the instruments, I wonder what home sounds like in the evenings.

Most of the bands were so good, that since returning, I’ve bought several of their albums (indicated by * in the lists above).

Moving on to the main event. British Sea Power played two sets. The First on Friday night and a second set on Sunday. Despite Sunday’s set being affected by a power cut, both sets were more than up to par. On both nights, the highlights were the fantastic encores. Sunday’s included Yan and Noble crowd surfing and then hanging from the rafters during the energetic 20 minute performance of Lately.
