Heading up from the Rough Trade I only managed to catch the last two songs of Loom who seemed to be suffering from massive technical issues. I’ve seen Loom before and they’re usually good value but I think the technical issue let them down and the songs I did catch seemed a bit lacklustre.

Headlining the short short bill was Queen Kwong. I’d seen her earlier in the year and enjoyed her performance and tonight was equally good plus there was the added bonus of a familiarity with her album. Tonight’s gig was really good. Great songs with good musicians and a great front person in a small venue. Not much more you can ask for. Very enjoyable.

Camden Rocks

A new one day festival spread across a dozen or so venues across Camden. I much prefer Camden to Shoreditch, so I thought I’d give it a go. The line-up wasn’t the strongest. But I still managed to find some interesting music during the day. Highlights were Dogbones and The Graveltones. Along with some decent entertainment from Strangefruit and Love Zombies. The only real disappointment was the Struts. I’d been told to see them by a friend but found them to be so cheesy (think the Darkness) I only managed to stick out two songs.

In all honesty, it wasn’t the strongest festival. But it wasn’t expensive and it was the first year. Hopefully, if they can widen the parameter of ‘Rocks’ to include a wider range of indie bands, then I think this has potential to be a decent low-key festival

A great double header and both new bands to me. I’d gone to see the Wytches who I’d just heard their first single. But it turned out Drenge were also of equal interest.

British Sea Power – An evening of two gigs

If you browse through my blog you’ll see that I’m a big BSP fan. One thing I love about them is that the try to play different venues and you never know what you’re going to hear. Tonight was no different, with two gigs in different locations on the same night.

The first gig was in of all places, East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf. Not you usual rock venue.

This was a laid back semi-accoustic affair with a really interesting set list with a number of obscure and rarely heard songs.

After this gig they then rushed off to The Barfly in Camden for a short explosive ‘rock’ set. Rushing across London only added to the enjoyment.

As always, BSP excelled. This year especially, they’ve been on fire. They seem to be comfortable with the material and with five albums and the Zeus EP, they have a significant back catalogue that helps keep them and the audience interested.

British Sea Power

British Sea Power played an intimate gig at the Camden Barfly to celebrate their new album. The gig was a mixture of new material from the new album, crowd favourites and even a rarely heard outing for ‘It Ended on an Oily Stage’. It was a great opportunity to hear the new songs. Some that worked on the album, such as Baby, disappointed live, but other such as Stunde Null and Georgie Ray impressed when I didn’t think they would. A special mention to Mongk II which is blinding live.

I also got to meet the legend that is Bill.
